Ships

HMAS Sydney ( 1st )

Naval cruiser that served with distinction during the First World War. Was responsible for disabling the German battle cruiser Emden at the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean. She displaced 5,600 tons ( tonnes ) and was armed with eight 6 inch ( 150 mm ) guns.

HMAS Sydney ( 2nd )

The second Sydney was designed to be the Royal Naval Cruiser Phaeton when she was laid down in 1933. However the Admiralty agreed to her replacing the Brisbane. Launched on September 22, 1934 and weighing 6,830 tons ( tonnes ) and measuring 562 feet ( 174 metres ), with eight 6 inch ( 150 mm ) guns balanced in four turrets and top speed of 32.5 knots. The Sydney virtually disappeared without a trace on the 19th of November 1941. So did her entire crew of 42 officers and 603 sailers, sunk by the disguised German raider, Kormoran. All that was ever found of the Sydney was a Carley life float and two RAN lifebelts which were picked up eight days later.

HMAS Sydney ( 3rd )

The Sydney was commissioned in 1948. This aircraft carrier sailed twice to Korea and was returned to service as a troop carrier to Vietnam.
