IMAX Theatre This is the largest museum of its type in the world. It was originally opened in 1877 and has now grown to encompass three city blocks. The exhibits detail the evolution of life on Earth. Some of the most popular exhibits include the dinosaurs, meteors and the Hall of Minerals and Gems, which contain exhibits valued at over $50 million including the Star of India. The Star of India is the world's largest blue star sapphire at 563 carats. Free tours begin at 10.15am, 11.15am, 1.15pm, 2.15pm and 3.15pm. Meet at the Hall of African Mammals on the second floor. If you enter from West 77th Street you will see the 19.5 metre ( 64 foot ) Haida Canoe which is a seafaring war canoe carved from the trunk of a single cedar. Proceeding straight through you will pass Northwest Coast Indian on the way to the IMAX theatre.To the left is Human Biology and Evolution while the right leads to New York State Environment exhibits. Also on this floor you will find the Minerals and Gems, Meteorites, Ocean Life and North American mammals exhibits. Don't miss the full size replica of a female blue whale located on the Ocean life Exhibit When you enter from Central Park West you will be on the second floor. From there you can proceed straight ahead to the African mammals, right to the Oceanic birds or left to Asian mammals and peoples. Also on this level you will find Birds of the world, Mexico and Central America, South American peoples, African Peoples and special exhibitions. Look out for full replicas of East African Elephants that were collected and mounted in the 1920's. If you reach this floor using the Cental Park West elevators or stairs you will find the African mammals exhibit straight in front of you. You can look down from the balcony to the displays below as well. Past this you'll find the Birds of New York City and the mammals of New York State. From there you enter the North American birds exhibits and on into the Primates. From here you can visit the Pacific peoples to the left and special exhibitions to the right. Also on this floor you will find Reptile and Amphibians as well as Eastern Woodlands and Plains Indians exhibits. Look out for the Komodo Dragon exhibit of the largest living lizards. Exiting from the Central Park elevators or stairs will place you near the Hall of Saurischian Dinosaurs. Through here leads to the Hall of Vertebrate Origins then to the Wing of Mammals and their Extinct Relatives. The final exhibit on this floor is the Hall of Ornithischian Dinosaurs. Here you will find the Diner Saurus and Garden Cafe as well as an entrance to the subway. Of the best Museums in town. You could spend days here looking at all the exhibits in detail. Keep an eye out for special exhibitions and IMAX movies. To fully do justice to this museum you would need to dedicate a full day, allowing you to see all the exhibits and take in at least one IMAX movie. Well worth the visit for adults and children alike. |
