Once you have actually arrived at one of the three major airports servicing New York City you will need to get into Manhattan. The major trick is to locate the ground transportation desk in each location, which is usually located near the baggage reclaim areas. Most are open 24 hours.

JFK - (718) 244 4444

The airport is serviced by a subway station that makes travel to Manhattan a little easier. Catch a free brown and white JFK long-term parking lot bus from any terminal ( arrive every 10-15 minutes ) to the Howard Beach-JFK airport subway station. You can take the A train into Manhattan ( usually about an hour ). This train will stop at various locations in Manhattan including Washington Square, 34th St Penn, 42nd St Port Authority and 59th St Columbus Circle, cost is $1.50.
One of the best means is via the small shuttle vans that will drop you at any hotel in Manhattan between 23rd and 63rd streets. They are a little more expensive than normal buses but offer a door to door service. Such service is offered by Gray Line Air Shuttle ( 800 ) 451 0455. The cost of this is around $16 per passenger.
The Carey Airport Express ( 718 ) 632 0500 runs to Grand Central Station and the Port Authority Terminal. Buses usually every thirty minutes from 5am to 1am daily. Trips can take from 45 - 75 minutes and cost around $ 13.

Taxi

Note the medallion number which i on the roof of the taxi, on the exterior of both passenger doors and on the dashboard. Also note the driver's six digit license number which is located on the dashboard. The driver is required to take you to any destination in the five boroughs of New York City, Nassau County, Westchester County and Newark Airport. Except to Manhattan, the fare within New York City is the amount indicated on the meter at the end of the trip plus tolls, if any. Remember :

  • tipping is optional
  • There is a 50 cents surcharge for trips commencing between 8 pm and 6 am ( except to Manhattan )
  • One fare pays for all passengers
  • Meter must read $2.00 at the start of the trip ( except to Manhattan )

The journey to or from here takes about half the time to get to JFK( about 30 minutes ).The Carey Airport Express ( 718 ) 632 0500 runs usually every half hour, stopping in a number of locations in Manhattan including Grand Central Station and the Port Authority, cost $ 9.Gray Line Air Shuttle 315 3006 will drop you at any hotel in Manhattan between 23rd and 63rd streets, cost $ 25.
It is also possible to catch a bus / subway combination to Manhattan. Look for the Q33 bus from LaGuardia to Jackson Heights / Roosevelt Av subway station. From here there are many subway options, but probably the best to the centre of Manhattan is the number 7 train. The total cost of this trip is $1.50
A taxi ride to Manhattan will cost around $ 25.

Newark - (201) 961 2000

The New Jersey Transit Authority ( 212 ) 564 8484 runs a bus between the airport and the Port Authority building every 15-30 minutes during the day but less frequently at night. The fare is around $ 9 and the trip usually takes 30-45 minutes. Olympic Trails Coach ( 212 ) 964 6233 also travel to and from the airport and Grand Central Station, Penn Station and the World Trade centre. The service runs from 5am-11pm and the cost is around $ 7.
A taxi ride to Manhattan will cost around $30
