General

The Museum was founded in 1870 by an American group of artists and philanthropists who wanted an artist institution to rival those found in Europe. Inside you will find works dating from prehistoric to modern times as well as collections from all continents. Most of the collections are housed on the two main floors.

Lower Floors

Make sure to check out the Temple of Dendur and Tiffany Columns exhibits that are the northern end of the floor. You'll also find exhibits covering : European painting sculpture, Art of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, Twentieth Century art, American art, Egyptian art, Greek and Roman art, Medieval art, arms and armour and special exhibitions.

Upper Floors

Here you will find works by Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Cezanne and more. Also make sure you see the Astor Court which replicates and authentic Ming-style scholar's garden and was created in 1979 as a gift to the United States from the Peoples Republic of China. On these floors you will also find European painting sculpture, Islamic art, Asian art, musical instruments and more.

Summary

This art museum could also be classified as a history musuem due to its extensive exhibits. There is something here for everyone, even you are not really into art. There is just so much to see and do, it would take days to see everything extensively. Without doubt one of the finest museums in the city.
