South Street Viaduct at Pier 18 Phone : (212) 669 9400 Subway : 2,3,4 to Fulton St Station At the South Street Seaport you'll find a range of glitzy stores and cafes, historic sailing ships, historic buildings and museum exhibits. From here you will also find great views of the Financial District and the Brooklyn Bridge. The region also contains a number of historic buildings, exhibits and galleries. Down Fulton Street After about a four block walk from the Fulton St Subway, near the corner of Fulton, Pearl, and Water St you'll find the Titanic Memorial Light house which commemorates all the souls aboard the ill fated vessel who never did reach their final destination here. From here continue down Fulton towards the river and you'll pass through Schermerhorn Row whose buildings were originally built as warehouses in 1811 but now contain a number of interesting shops. You'll also find the Seaport Museum Visitors' Centre where you can buy tickets to many of the attractions at the Seaport. Across the street you'll find the Fulton Market Building. On the lower floor you'll find a collection of bakeries and food stores. On the upper level you will find a large range of International cuisine establishments all competing for your taste buds. At the end of the street you'll find the Fulton Fish Market, the largest fresh fish market in the country. The market has been here for over 150 years and still going strong, however you will have to get up really, really early to see any action.
Across the street you'll find Pier 17 to the left and the Pier 16 Ticketbooth straight ahead and a number of ships docked further to the right. At Pier 17 you'll find a three level shopping complex filled with glitzy shops, restaurants and food stalls. The ticket booth at Pier 16 stays open from 10am to 7pm and you can buy tickets for several cruises offered from here as well as to a number of galleries located nearby. Some of the ships docked nearby at the port include the tugboat W O Decker and the second largest sailing ship in existence, Peking. On board there is a short 1929 film of the ship during an actual journey around Cape Horn. Smaller ships include the Wavertree, an iron hulled tri-masted vessel built in1885.
The Seaport conducts a number of concerts and events during the summer and has a small ice skating rink during the winter. The Seaport is well worth the visit as is conveniently located between the Financial District and the Brooklyn Bridge. It is a great place for a bite to eat. Get a coffee and take in the view. Make sure that you go around to the north side of Pier 17 to see the fantastic views of the Brooklyn Bridge. |
